Week 12 Muddiest Point

Why is there a fee to upgrade a wiki? Are there any preventive measure against spamming social tagging?

Week 12

The article on libraries and wikis was a good article. I like the idea and personally think it would be a good idea. The East Tennessee State library having a instructional program to walk students through their website is a excellent example of the benefits. The article also mention it's use in classroom instruction which makes things much easier for both student and instructor. The social tagging article was also brilliant, storing bookmarks in other places online is convenient. I believe libraries would benefit from this tremendously.Jimmy Wales is a very smart individual and very well organized. Wikipedia is currently one of the top online encyclopedias. I usually use wikipedia to obtain general information on a subject, then do my own research from there.

Week 11

The article on digital libraries explains itself and was very simple to understand to me.The illustration of the links were really helpful. The Dewey meets Turing article was interesting because it discussed the digital libraries initiative. Librarians, computer scientists and publishers definitely benefited from this. What I did not know is that google was given birth through this initiative. As the traditional library was affected by this program, it also assisted librarians by better assisting the public. The article on institutional repositories was also interesting ,I think that this is very important concerning scholarly communication.

Week 10 Readings

I have never heard of the deep web until reading this article. The deep web is 500 times more vast than the regular web. I think this interesting and very useful, especially involving research. Since the deep web is more direct in searching, it is even more beneficial. The quality is evidently superior than the regular web. After reading the article, I learned some elements about search engines that i did not know. One in particular is bright planet technology which seems to be great for research and advanced in technology. I also did not know that JSTOR would be considered as a deep website, but I guess it would make sense. JSTOR is for academic research. So the next time I do research, I will try some of the websites listed as deep websites. I am sure the websites will be very beneficial.

Week 9 readings

The XML article was interesting,I thought the differences between SGML and XML were unique. It just seems to me that XML has many great features. The main feature that stood out to me was identifying illustrations in text files. XML catalogs are complex to me,but the XML tutorial was very helpful. The tutorial was also organized well and easy to learn.

Muddiest Point 9

The XML article is very informative. I did not know that XML blends multiple files together.

Muddiest Point

I did not understand certain aspects of CSS, but recently answered my own questions.

Week 8 readings

The articles were interesting. If I had my choice of developer certificate,it would be the HTML certificate because that is the format I am most familiar with.I think it is amazing that you can acquire certification online. You can get tutorials from universities which are recommended readings. I definitely like the HTML cheat sheet, it is a quick way to learn different tags and formats. I think it is interesting that by editing a CSS document, you change so many attributes. I also thought that the 16 colors are unique.

Week 7

The article presented was very informative and answered some questions I did not know very much about DNS root servers until now.I think the map of how the net works is easy to understand . Since I am a visual learner this really works for me. Wifi is really amazing, I have a PSP(playstation portable) and I use wifi whenever I am at a coffee shop to check my e-mail.I enjoyed the google video, I always did wonder who started this unique search engine. Sergey Bin and Larry Page are brilliant indivivuals.

Muddiest Point week 7

The IP address was a bit confusing for me,is there a certain numerical code or octet for city governments or corporations?

week 6

I learned alot with these articles, but somethings I knew and other things I didn't know. I already knew about LAN lines and the internet. However I did not know much about network bridges and the three types. I had never heard of a datagram which was interesting to me. Amazingly this is something Nasa uses and that is unique to me. So this illustrates to me how vast technology is and will become even greater as time progresses. Communication and technology are complimentary it seems.

Muddiest Point

I did not know that wireless LAN technology used radio waves. I always thought there was difference...I also think that the article on Local Area Network should elaborate a little on octopus network.

week 5

The articles were interesting, but I am still a bit confused about the compression. However I think the imaging Pittsburgh article was excellent. This is a great way to show the culture of the city during those time periods.I also like the option of a keyword search, allowing the viewer a to narrow down a specific time or collection. As far as the youtube article,I think using it to advertise is a great idea because alot of people view youtube. The website sometimes places your ad or video as a suggestion in catergories. So the person would probably recieve more views.

week 5 Muddiest Point

I'm not sure I understand data compression. Is it saved encoded information?

Week 4

Databases always did interest me because it deals with information. The Hierachal model caught my attention because the way it's setup. I also like it because you can multiple data in a good order.
The metadata article was a good article, data about data. My first time ever hearing that term,it reminds me of Dr.Suess for reason. Since I maybe going into archive librarian work,I really observed this information in more depth.Acording to the article, archivists use it to provide visual info for researchers. I'm a visual learner,so this will go hand and with me. As far as the Dublin Core article I was a little confused about it.

Muddiest point

I don't understand the sum of total of information as explained about metadata.....
Here are the comments I made recently....... http://thealleyview-1.blogspot.com/

Assignment 3/ Linux Program and Mac OS X

I have never heard of the Linux program until reading the article. I believe sometimes one idea can spark a technological revolution such as a group Bell Lab developers. I can tell that I am a little behind on computer software. However the article about Mac OS X, I have heard about. I knew some information about it,but received a deeper understanding of it. I have not used an apple computer in years and never learned of the Darwin packages. My definition of hacker and the Mac OS X's definition is totally different. I always thought a hacker was person who breaks in programs and computers and steals information. Well I definitely learned a significant amount information and found it very interesting.

Muddiest Point

I really did not understand the Vista software.... So is the Vista program more advanced than XP?

Saturday, September 6, 2008

Muddiest Point

I wonder how far technology will go with the gigabytes?

Assignment 2

Moore's Law was very interesting to me because his conclusion has highly contributed to technology, also proved accurate. So in a sense he was man above his time, benefitting many companies, media and the public. As far as computer hardware,I learned alot concerning sound cards that I did not know.

The library and technology

Reading Assignment 1

The trends from the article Five-Year Information Format Trends was quite interesting. The facts illustrate to me that the library is definitely evolving with technology. However I think that a major challenge will be publication of information. I myself prefer books as a resource more than any other source.(I guess I 'm old school)
